2003 SYTTENDE MAI
(NORWEGIAN CONSTITUTION DAY)
SATURDAY, MAY 17
CLIFTON CITY PARK

Prayer for May 17, 2003 Celebration:

Gracious Holy Father,
Having so recently seen the conclusion of hostilities in Afghanistan and Iraq, we give thanks to You in the words of our national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner:
“Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land,
Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation…
and this be our motto “In God is our trust.”

On this Norwegian Independence Day we express our praise in similar words from the Norwegian National Anthem:
“Praise the Lord who all-compelling, sav’d our land from harm
          …God our victory sealed.”

Our declaration of faith in You, O Lord, spoken and sung, is also heralded in the flag which flies above us today, the flag of Norway emblazoned with that pre-eminent symbol of our faith, the cross of Your Son, the cross on which He won for us and for all humanity victory over the tyranny of Satan and freedom from the enslaving power of evil.

Grant that we may never take for granted Your blessings of national freedom and, most especially, spiritual freedom. We are eternally grateful, O God, that we may know that priceless and enduring liberty and peace which is ours in our crucified and risen Lord Jesus Christ – in whose name we pray.  Amen
